Fasting the Day of 'Arafah if it coincides with Friday

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14562 )
Q: You know that the Day of 'Arafah was a Friday , and we fasted it based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year.صيام عرفة يكفر السنة الماضية والباقية
Sahih Muslim 1162b
, narrated by Muslim . The imam of the mosque told us: In our view, it is not permissible to fast on Friday unless one has fasted the day before it. So most of us broke our fast, while some fasted in confusion about the matter, knowing that our fasting was out of respect for the Day of 'Arafah and seeking reward, not to prefer Friday over other days. Please rule for us, may Allah reward you: Is the truth with the mosque imam and those who broke their fast that day, or is the truth with us who fasted it? And what should we do if 'Arafah or 'Ashura coincides with such a day? Peace be upon you.

A: It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade singling out Friday for fasting among the days, and commanded that one fast the day before it or the day after it. However, if the Day of 'Arafah or 'Ashura coincides with a Friday, it is permissible to fast it on the basis that it is the Day of 'Arafah or the Day of 'Ashura. The Imam Muslim narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not choose the Friday night among all other nights for standing in (Tahajjud) prayer, and do not choose Friday among all other days for Saum (fasting) except that one you have accustomed to.لا تخصوا ليلة الجمعة بقيام من بين الليالي، ولا تخصوا يوم الجمعة بصيام من بين الأيام إلا أن يكون في صوم يصومه أحدكم
Riyad as-Salihin 1760
It is also reported regarding the virtue of fasting these two days that it expiates the previous year, and regarding 'Arafah that it expiates the previous year and the year to come. So the one who fasts does so from this perspective, and thus it is permissible. In (Sahih Muslim ), it is narrated from Abu Qatadah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
Fast the Day of Arafah, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins) of the year after it, and the year before it.صيام يوم عرفة إني أحتسب على الله أن يكفر السنة التي قبله والسنة التي بعده
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 749Da'if (Darussalam)
And regarding the fasting of 'Ashura, he said:
I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year.إني أحتسب على الله أن يكفر السنة التي قبله
Sunan Ibn Majah 1738Sahih (Darussalam)
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
