Paying the zakah of trade goods from the goods themselves

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19692 )
Q: Is it permissible to pay the zakah of trade goods from the goods themselves , such that the owner of household goods stores, for example, pays his trade zakah in household goods without estimating their value and paying it in cash? What is the obligatory amount, and how is it estimated? May Allah guide everyone to what pleases Him. Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
A : The original ruling for trade goods prepared for sale and purchase, if their value reaches the nisab by themselves or by adding them to the currency he owns that is subject to zakah, is that they must be valued at the completion of the lunar year at their current market value, and one-quarter of a tenth of that value must be paid out, i.e., two and a half percent in cash. However, if paying the value is difficult, or if there is a need to pay the zakah of trade goods from the goods themselves, such as the interest of the poor and needy in doing so, while the wealthy person takes precaution by paying out what reaches the value of the obligatory zakah in those goods, then there is no harm
by that, and there is no objection to it, and what indicates this is whatal-Bukhariin (his Sahih) in the chapter: (Goods in Zakah, vol. 2, p. 122) fromTawusas a mawquf report: He saidMu'adh(may Allah be pleased with him)to the people of Yemen: "Bring me goods of coarse or worn-out clothing as charity in place of barley and sorghum; it is easier for you and better for the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the women:
Give charity, even if it is from your jewelryتصدقن ولو من حليكن
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 635Sahih (Darussalam)
, so he did not exclude the obligatory charity from other types, and the woman would throw down her waistband and her ornaments, and he did not exclude gold and silver from goods. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
