Q 5: Opening the Prayer: Is it said in every prayer or only in the obligatory prayer?
A 5: The supplication for opening the prayer is said in every prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary, and it is said in the first unit of prayer before reciting Surat al-Fatihah. In (the two Sahihs), from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:150 The prayer here encompasses both the obligatory and the voluntary, and it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he also opened the prayer by saying: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 243Hasan (Darussalam) . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
In (the two Sahihs), from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to keep silent - between the opening Takbir of the prayer and the recitation of the Qur'an - for a short while. Then, I asked him (about that) and he replied, "I say, 'O Allah! Keep me apart from my sins (faults) as you have kept apart the east and west. O Allah clean me from my sins as a white garment is cleaned from dirt. O Allah wash me of my sins with water, snow and hail."
When the Prophet opened the Salat he would say: (Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk)
أنه استفتح الصلاة أيضًا بقول: سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك
