The second question of Fatwa number ( 16097 )
Q 2: What is the ruling on visiting the awliya (close friends of Allah) , given that we have the graves of two of the awliya (close friends of Allah), and the people of the village visit them to seek blessing and tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) through them to Allah, and to make du'a' (supplication) at their graves?
A 2 : It is not permissible to visit the awliya (close friends of Allah) or anyone else for the sake of seeking blessing or tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) through them to Allah; because this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) or a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah). Therefore, seeking blessing from the people of the graves is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah; because blessing is sought from Allah and not from anyone else. By this, it is known that what many of the ignorant do around some graves, such as istighathah (calling for aid) to their occupants, seeking their help, and asking them for healing for the sick, is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). As for tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) to Allah by their right, or their status, or their selves, this is from the forbidden bid'ah (religious innovation), and from the means to major shirk (associating partners with Allah). We ask Allah for all Muslims to be safe from that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
