Q: Is it permissible to buy gold-plated watches for men , some of which are cheap, such as 120 riyals or so, and is it permissible to buy gold-plated spoons and knives ? I ask you to inform me about these vessels, which may only have a coating.
A: It is not permissible to buy gold-plated vessels, spoons, and knives; due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from drinking from gold and silver vessels, and this includes the pure gold and silver vessel, and the one coated with them, and spoons and knives are in the ruling of vessels. Likewise, it is not permissible to buy gold-plated watches for men; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing gold for men, and this includes pure gold and the coated. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
