The second question of Fatwa No. ( 17902 )
Q 2: Two men are sitting when a man of great influence or their elder shaykh appears. Is it permissible to stand up for him, whether out of exaltation, honor, or to win his heart? Please clarify with evidence from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the recognized fiqh books.
A 2: It is permissible to stand up to greet a person who enters the gathering or passes by it; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the Ansar: when Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward to judge the matter of Banu Qurayzah , and because Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to Ka'b ibn Malik from the circle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Ka'b came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after Allah had accepted the repentance of him and his two companions, so he shook his hand and congratulated him on his repentance. And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand up for his daughter Fatimah when
she entered upon him, and he would take her hand, kiss her, and seat her in his place. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon her, she would stand up to him, take his hand, and kiss him. As for standing up solely for the sake of exaltation or respect, and not for the sake of greeting, it is not permissible; based on the hadith:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2755Hasan (Darussalam) narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with a sound chain. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
