Voting in Elections and Running for Office
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 4029 )
Q 5: Is it permissible to vote in elections and run for office? Given that our country is governed by other than what Allah has revealed
A 5: It is not permissible for a Muslim to run for office in the hope of being included in the ranks of a government that rules by other than what Allah has revealed and operates by other than the Shari'ah of Islam. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to vote for him or for any other person who works in this government,
unless the person who runs for office is a Muslim and those who vote hope that by entering into that system they will be able to convert the ruling to the implementation of the Shari'ah of Islam, and they take that as a means to overcome the system of governance, provided that the person who ran for office does not, after fully entering, work in any positions that conflict with the Islamic Shari'ah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
