Donating a Kidney to One's Father
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 10315 )
Q: My father is suffering from kidney disease, and the doctors have determined that both of his kidneys are non-functional. He goes to the hospital three times a week for dialysis, which is exhausting for him. The doctors said that this will continue with him for the rest of his life, or you can donate a kidney to him from one of the family members. I am ready to do so, but I am concerned to know whether that is permissible or not? We have heard that there is a fatwa permitting the donation of any organ of the body after death, so is that permissible in the case of life? And is it permissible to purchase the kidney of a living disbeliever from India , for example? Please answer us, may you be rewarded, if Allah wills.
A: It is permissible for you to donate one of your kidneys to your father, if the trustworthy doctors determine that there is no harm to you from transferring it from your body to your father's body, and that the doctors are confident that the operation will be successful.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
