Bringing the poets of the gatherings to the wedding night
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 17203 )
Q: It has become customary and widespread among the tribes to bring in some of those called the poets of dialogue, such as bringing two poets, each
from a tribe, in exchange for giving them a sum of money at wedding parties and other occasions. The two poets keep the night alive, as they say, where there are two facing rows of men, each poet having a row that collectively repeats what the two poets say in loud voices, with clapping, dancing, and swaying. Each poet boasts of his lineage and ancestry, and attacks the other poet. Several questions arise from this: 1- What is the ruling on hiring this type of poet, and the ruling on this type of poetry? 2 - What is the ruling on dancing, clapping, and swaying? 3 - What is the legal ruling for those who stand in the rows for the poets and repeat their words? 4 - What is the ruling on the poets attacking each other, and attacking lineages and boasting of ancestry in most of their poetry? 5 - What is the ruling on going to places where this type of poetry is found? 6 - What is the ruling on staying up with them until just before dawn? 7 - Some of these poets train young men in poetry and dancing and take them with them to places where this type is found; what is the ruling on that? 8 -
What is the ruling on accepting an invitation to occasions where this type of poetry is present? May Allah reward you with good.
A: These actions are forbidden; it is not permissible to do them, nor to go to their places, even if you are invited, unless your intention is to disapprove of them and warn against them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
