You have learned that the Qur'an has several recitations; what is the best of these recitations? Then, what is the ruling on reading from the mushaf without the rules of tajwid?

The questioner : Allah revealed the Qur'an to our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Arabic language, but you have learned that this Qur'an has several recitations. What is the best of these recitations? Then, what is the ruling on reading from the mushaf without lengthening the word that has a lengthening mark above it, or without using the nasal sound, or without applying the guttural quality to what should have it? Please inform us of this, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The matter is as the questioner mentioned, which is that this Noble Qur'an was revealed in the Arabic language, as Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا
[Yusuf 12:2]
, and He the Exalted said:
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا
[Az-Zukhruf 43:3]
, and He the Exalted said:
(193) The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (194) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - (195) In a clear Arabic language. نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الأَمِينُ * عَلَى قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ * بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُبِينٍ
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:193-195]
. There is no doubt also that there are multiple recitations in the Qur'an, and the famous recitations are the seven. It is the Sunnah for one who is knowledgeable about them to read with this one at one time and with that one at another time, because all seven recitations are mass-transmitted and established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And since they are all established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is prescribed to read with this one at one time and with that one at another time, just as we say regarding acts of worship that come in various forms: it is recommended to perform them in every form in which they were reported, doing this form once and that form once, so that one has come with the entire Sunnah. But this is for one who is knowledgeable about the recitations, not for one who is guessing, thinking that there is a recitation in this verse when there is not. Indeed, this is not permissible. Rather, one who is not knowledgeable about the recitations should restrict himself to what is in the mushafs that are before him. And regarding his question: Is it permissible for one who reads from the mushaf to leave out the lengthening, the nasal sound, the guttural quality, or the like? The correct opinion in this matter, in my view, is that it is permissible for him to do so. And reading with tajwid according to the known rules is only on the path of recommendation and what is more complete. As for what is obligatory, it is merely establishing the letters such that one does not drop a letter or add a letter. As for the attributes of the letters, such as lengthening, nasal sound, and guttural quality, and the like, they are from the category of recommendation and not from the category of obligation, as I see it in this matter.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
