Fatwa No. ( 19397 )
Q: What is the ruling on steam baths? Is it permissible for women and men to enter them without a waistcloth, given that they have become widespread? Please give us a ruling on these questions, may Allah reward you.
A:Entering steam baths for men without a waistcloth is strongly prohibited. This is established in the hadith ofJabir(may Allah be pleased with him):
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not enter a bath house except wearing an Izar (waist wrap).
Sunan an-Nasa'i 401Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated byal-Nasa'iand al-Hakimand he authenticated it according to the criteria ofMuslim, and it has corroborating narrations. As for women, they are prohibited from entering the baths. It is narrated fromAisha(may Allah be pleased with her) that she said to some women who had come to visit her: "Are you the ones who send your women to the baths?" I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
No woman removes her garments in other than the house of her husband except that she has torn the screen between herself and her Lord.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2803Hasan (Darussalam)
It was narrated byAhmadand Abu Dawudand al-Tirmidhiand Ibn Majahand al-Hakimand he authenticated it according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and al-Dhahabi agreed with himal-Dhahabi. And in (MusnadImam Ahmad) and al-HafizIbn Kathir, that'Umar ibn al-Khattab(may Allah be pleased with him) said:
O people: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not sit at a table over which wine is circulated, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not enter the bathhouse except with a waistcloth, and whoever among you women believes in Allah and the Last Day, let her not enter the bathhouse.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1861
. And the HafizIbn Kathir(may Allah have mercy on him): and the Imam narratedAbu Ya'la al-Mawsiliand the HafizAbu Hatim Muhammad ibn Hibbanin his *Sahih*, titled *Al-Anwa' wa al-Taqasim*, from the narration ofMuhammad ibn Thabit ibn Sharhabil, from'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Khatmi, fromAbu Ayyub al-Ansari(may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not enter the bathhouse except with a waistcloth, and whoever among you women believes in Allah and the Last Day, let her not enter the bathhouse.
, he said: So I said thatto 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azizduring his caliphate, so he wrote toAbu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Hazm: askMuhammad ibn Thabitabout his hadith, for it is pleasing to me, so he asked him, then he wrote to'Umarforbade women from entering the bathhouses, so this'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azizimplemented this Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
, and all Muslims unanimously agreed that'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azizamong the rightly guided imams,
and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, who judged by truth and were just therein. This is the end of his statement. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
