The Prayer of Dhuhr and Asr at Different Times

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 7550 )
Q: How are the times for the midday and afternoon prayers determined? For example, in winter, the shadow is fully formed (five feet) at twelve o'clock by the time of the Republic of Mali . How are the midday and afternoon prayers performed at such a time? And in summer, the shadow is under the feet, and the times become confused for us throughout the year. For this reason, we send to your eminence to clarify for us how these times for the midday and afternoon prayers are determined?
A: The Shari'ah has explained to us the times of the prayers with general cosmic signs in the eras and places that are fixed and do not vary. It explained to us that the time for Dhuhr begins at the time of zawal, meaning: when the sun tilts from the middle of the sky toward the west, and at that point the shadow of every object begins to extend eastward after having been
westward before the zawal, and its time ends with the entry of the time for Asr, whether the length of the shadow at the time of zawal is long as in winter, or short as in summer. And it explained to us that the time for Asr begins when the shadow of every object becomes equal to its own length after the shadow that existed at the time of zawal, whether it is long or short. The scholars have mentioned that the length of every person is seven feet by his own foot, and on this basis, the beginning of the time for Asr is when the amount added after the shadow of zawal becomes seven feet by your own foot, wherever you are and whenever it is, in summer or winter, and its time ends with the setting of the sun. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
