Seeking Nearness to Allah Through the Prophets and the Righteous

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 9016 ):
Q1: We ask you to clarify for us the difference between a believer and one who associates partners with Allah, knowing that there are people who pray, fast, perform Hajj, and do all good deeds, but they seek nearness to Allah through the prophets and the righteous . Is this permissible?
A1: If a Muslim commits an act of disbelief that takes him out of Islam, such as calling for aid from the dead for the healing of the sick, or for the expansion of sustenance, or for the granting of offspring, he thereby exits the religion of Islam, and his deeds of prayer, fasting, and the like of worship are nullified if he dies upon that state. If he commits a sin that does not reach the level of disbelief, such as theft or dealing in usury or interest, his case is left to Allah; if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him. By this, you know that the question is general in nature; if what is meant by seeking nearness to Allah is what we have mentioned, you have learned its ruling. If what is meant by it is seeking nearness to Allah through the status of the prophets and the righteous and their right, without asking them or calling for aid from them, then that is a religious innovation and one of the means to associating partners with Allah. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
