The Disbeliever Initiating the Greeting of Peace

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

Fatwa No. ( 11123 ):

Q: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from initiating the greeting of peace with disbelievers. Does this prohibition apply only to saying to them: (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah), or is it a prohibition that includes all forms of initiating a greeting? And is it permissible for me to initiate a greeting to my Christian neighbor with something other than saying: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah, such as saying to him: Good morning, how are you (Good Morning) Good morning in English, and may Allah reward us and the Muslims with good?
A: It is not permissible to initiate the greeting of peace with a disbeliever; for what is established from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it.لا تبدأوا اليهود والنصارى بالسلام، فإذا لقيتم أحدهم في طريق فاضطروه إلى أضيقه
Sahih Muslim 2167a
Narrated by
Muslim, and in the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When the People of the Book offer you salutations, you should say: The same to you.إذا سلم عليكم أهل الكتاب فقولوا وعليكم
Sahih Muslim 2163a
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . They should respond with what the hadith indicates, which is to say: And upon you. There is no harm in saying to a disbeliever initially: How are you, How did you spend the morning, How did you spend the evening, and the like, if there is a need for it. A group of scholars stated this explicitly, among them Abu al-Abbas the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad , his family, and his Companions.
