What is the meaning of a mass-transmitted report?
The scholars say that a mass-transmitted report is one narrated by a group from a group, where it is impossible for them to conspire to lie. That is, the layers starting from the Companion—the first layer—each of them narrated a specific hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then this layer is received by another layer, which is of the number of mass transmission: ten, twenty, or thirty. So each layer contains this number of mass transmission. This hadith is called by them a mass-transmitted report. They differed greatly in determining the number of mass transmission, ranging from those who say fifty, forty, or sixty, and so on.
And the correct view is that there is no fixed number for mass transmission, because the matter is relative. Perhaps five trustworthy, memorizing scholars agree to narrate a hadith, and a person is certain that these people memorized it and did not err, let alone that they lied. It is said of this hadith, if it comes in this form—five from five from five—it is a mass-transmitted report. Perhaps ten, twenty, or thirty liars gather to narrate one hadith, and this number does not benefit anything because they are accused. And so, the stronger the trust, the fewer the number required, and conversely, the weaker the trust, the more the number required. So the issue is relative regarding the number of mass transmission.
