Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority إني جاعلك في الأرض خليفة
[Al-Baqarah 2:30]

It does not mean that our Lord, Mighty and Majestic, is making him a successor on His behalf, Blessed and Exalted is He, far be it from that. Rather, He made him a successor for a group of jinn who had committed much corruption on the earth. This is what the scholars of tafsir mention, and what Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned specifically regarding this issue, and he mentions something that is good to mention now:
That this phrase was only innovated by some of the extremists of the Sufis who believe in the indwelling or the union, that there is nothing there of a Creator and a created being, no, rather it is a unity. So the human being is the successor of Allah on the earth; this phrase can be applied to the doctrine of those who say in the unity of existence from among the extremists of the Sufis, as for those who magnify...
