The Shaykh : They said: "By Allah, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, we did not intend anything but good." And the truth is that the innovators, except for those among them who have ulterior motives, intend good. But as the verse says, "You hope for salvation but do not follow its paths," and so on. Ibn Mas'ud's response was: "How many are there who desire good but do not attain it." Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) told us: . He said—the one who witnessed the story: "We certainly saw those people fighting us on the Day of al-Nahrawan." That is, they became part of the Khawarij who rebelled against the Rightly Guided Caliph 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. The point of this is: what are they doing? Just as they did not say, "We count our dhikr with pebbles," they took something that had an absolute basis in the Shari'ah and they restricted it. So Ibn Mas'ud rejected this restriction from them for this reason.
Indeed, there are people who recite the Qur'an, but it does not go beyond their throats—it does not reach their hearts—they slip out of the religion as an arrow slips out of its quiver.
إن أقواما يقرؤون القرآن لا يجاوز حناجرهم - لا يصل إلى قلوبهم - يمرقون من الدين كما يمرق السهم من الرمية
