Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Also, Mamdouh Kليب Naimat from Jordan, from al-'Aridah, says: A woman forbade herself from smoking and swore on the Qur'an that she would not return to smoking, and eventually she smoked, and after that she paid an expiation, and finally her husband forced her to smoke, and then she did not smoke again. What is her ruling?

The Shaykh : We ask Allah for well-being. This is like the first one.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : She forbade herself from smoking with the intention of abstaining from it, but she returned to it, so she must pay an expiation for an oath. If the expiation she offered was the amount of the oath expiation, meaning she fed ten poor people, then her obligation is discharged. Otherwise, she must discharge her obligation by feeding ten poor people. Then, it was an error committed by her husband where he ordered her to return to smoking.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Because this is an order to disobey, and there is no obedience to a husband in that or in it. It is not permissible for her to obey her husband in what is forbidden. People differed regarding the ruling on smoking when it first appeared; some permitted it, some forbade it, some disliked it, and some said it is better to avoid it. But after its harm became clear by the consensus of doctors in our time, it became clear to us that it is forbidden and that it is not permissible for a person to smoke it, because it leads to harm in the body, and then it is a waste of money without benefit, and then it is accompanied by bad odors that harm those who are not accustomed to smoking it. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
