Do you recommend reading the books of al-Ghazali, al-Sha'rawi, al-Sabouni, and al-Tantawi? And what are the beliefs of these people?

The questioner : He says: Do you recommend reading the books of the following personalities? And what are the beliefs of these people? Al-Ghazali, al-Sha'rawi, al-Sabouni, and al-Tantawi?

The Shaykh : I advise and I do not advise. I do not advise the general public to read these books because of the many deviations in them from much of the evidence of the Sunnah and from the methodology of the Salaf al-Salih in general. This is my advice to the general public. As for the specialists who have been given knowledge that helps them to distinguish the truth from the falsehood in these books, I advise them to read them; indeed, it is obligatory for them to read them so that they may clarify the confusion and deviation in them, and warn people from falling into such things. For some of these people, at least, their means of conveying their opinions and deviations to people is not just writing; rather, they may be given the opportunity to speak to the whole world via the radio. Therefore, some of the people of knowledge must read these books and clarify the deviation in them.
On the occasion of the previously mentioned hadith regarding musical instruments, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There will certainly be among my Ummah people who will make permissible fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments; they will spend the night in amusement and play, and they will rise in the morning having been transformed into apes and pigs. ليكونَنَّ في أمَّتي أقوام يستحلُّون الحرَ والحرير والخمر والمعازف ؛ يمسون في لهوٍ ولعبٍ ، ويصبحون وقد مُسخوا قردةً وخنازير
. I read in a book by one of the aforementioned people in the question titled "Fatwas" or something similar, where he was asked about the ruling on singing and musical instruments? He spoke =
-- And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah --
= He spoke for about a page and a half, all of it being speech, and in it there is neither a verse nor a hadith, neither authentic nor weak. So how can fatwas be based on this kind of speech that makes permissible what Allah has forbidden, without mentioning a verse or a hadith in that regard? While the hadith that contradicts his fatwa is an authentic hadith, and he did not mention it at all. This is undoubtedly a serious deviation. And this is an example from dozens, if not hundreds, of examples in which these writers, who are called callers to Islam, are indeed callers to Islam without doubt or hesitation, but they call to a concept of Islam that contradicts the Book and the Sunnah in much of what they have adopted. This example is sufficient for you now: the hadith prohibiting musical instruments, which are called in the terminology of the Shari'ah ma'azif, was ignored and not paid any attention to at all. In fact, one of these writers explicitly stated, without any fear of Allah or shame before the servants of Allah, that he likes or enjoys listening to some of Umm Kulthum's songs sometimes, and he sees no harm in that, even though that is a trial beyond all trials.
It has reached us many years ago that some women were captivated by the recitation of this Egyptian, Abd al-Basit, at the beginning of his emergence. And what was he reciting? He was reciting the Noble Qur'an. So how would men not be captivated by women, or by some women, if we sing that known singing? And the reverse is the reverse: how would women not be captivated by the singing of men, which has become broadcast and has become an art, unfortunately? None of these people raised their heads when what came from Allah in His Book regarding the prohibition of following vain talk was mentioned, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly stated this in more than one authentic hadith. The issue now is not to enumerate the evidence for the prohibition of those instruments, but rather the intention is to clarify that these writers were not on correct and sound knowledge, because they did not study the Sunnah. From this, you know the value of his saying (peace be upon him):
I have left among you two matters in which you will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. They will not separate until they come to me at the Pond. تركت فيكم أمرين لن تضلُّوا ما إن تمسَّكتم بهما ؛ كتاب الله وسنَّتي ، ولن يتفرَّقا حتى يَرِدَا عليَّ الحوض
. So whoever holds fast to the Qur'an and turns away from the Sunnah, his likeness is like that of one who holds fast to the Sunnah and turns away from the Qur'an; for both of them have not taken hold of these two foundations, in which whoever holds fast to them is saved, and whoever contradicts them is destroyed.
Yes.
