Conditions of the Udhiyah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The udhiyah is to be from camels, cattle, or sheep,And for this reason we say: The conditions for what is sacrificed are four: The first condition is that it be of the species established in the Shari'ah as being sacrificed,And it is: namely camels, cattle, and sheep. So if one sacrifices a horse, for example, it is not accepted from him; because it is not of the species that is sacrificed, even if it is more expensive than camels, cattle, and sheep,And the evidence for this: as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our command, it is rejected” meaning: it is rejected from him.
The second condition: That it reaches the age considered valid in the Shari'ah: which is half a year for the lamb, one year for the goat, two years for the cow, and five years for the camel,By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Do not slaughter except a mature animal, unless it is difficult for you, then slaughter a one-year-old from the lambs” .
The third condition: That it be free from defects that prevent validity, which are mentioned in the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): “Four things are not permissible in the udhiyah: the one-eyed whose blindness is obvious, the sick whose sickness is obvious, the lame whose lameness is obvious, and the emaciated which does not fatten” The emaciated: the thin one,And the one that does not fatten: which has no marrow. These four defects prevent validity.
If a person sacrifices a sheep that is obviously one-eyed, it is not valid.
And if he sacrifices a sheep that is obviously lame, it is not accepted.
And if he sacrifices a sheep that is obviously sick, it is not accepted.
And if he sacrifices a thin one that has no marrow, it will not be accepted.
And likewise what is in the meaning of these defects or more severe than them: such as the blind, for example. If he sacrifices a blind one, it is not accepted from him, just as if he sacrifices a one-eyed one whose blindness is obvious. And likewise the one whose hand or leg is cut off; because if the sacrifice of the lame one is not valid, then the one whose hand or leg is cut off is even more so. And the sacrifice of what has been afflicted by a cause of death is not valid, such as the one in difficult labor until it is safe. And likewise the strangled, the beaten to death, the one that fell to its death, the one gored to death, and what the wild beast has eaten. All of these are not valid; because they are more deserving of invalidity than the sick one.
As for the defects that are less than these, the udhiyah is valid even if the udhiyah has some of these defects. But the more complete it is, the better it is. So the one from which a part of its ear or horn or tail is cut off is valid, but the more complete is better. There is no difference between the cut being small or large, even if the whole horn or the whole ear or the whole tail is cut off, it is valid, but the more complete it is, the better it is.
The fourth condition: That the udhiyah be in the time specified by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), which is from the prayer of the festival to the last day of the days of Tashreeq,So the days of slaughter are four: the day of the festival and the three days after it. So whoever slaughters before the prayer, he has no udhiyah, even if he is ignorant; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and informed them: “Whoever slaughters before the prayer, his sacrifice is not a sacrifice,So a man named Abu Burdah ibn Niyar stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, I sacrificed before I prayed,So he said: your sheep is a sheep of meat” ,And he said: “Whoever slaughters before the prayer, his sacrifice is not a sacrifice,And he said: so let him slaughter another in its place” .
And likewise whoever sacrifices after the days of Tashreeq have ended, he has no udhiyah, and that is because he sacrificed outside the time,So these are the conditions for what is sacrificed: That it be from the livestock: which are camels, cattle, and sheep, and that it reaches the age considered valid in the Shari'ah by being a two-year-old from the camels, cattle, and goats, or a one-year-old from the lambs,And the third condition: That it be free from the defects that prevent validity,And the fourth condition: That it be in the specified time.
Then the Sunnah is not to exaggerate with the udhiyah by increasing the number; because this is extravagance. For some people now, you find the man sacrificing for himself and his family with one udhiyah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the righteous Salaf used to do,But the wife comes and says: I want to sacrifice,And the daughter comes and says: I want to sacrifice,And the sister comes and says: I want to sacrifice, so multiple sacrifices gather in the house. And this is contrary to what the righteous Salaf used to do. For the most noble of creation is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and he did not sacrifice except with one for himself and his family. And it is known that he had nine wives -Meaning: nine households - and yet he did not sacrifice except with one for himself and his family, and he sacrificed with another for his Ummah (peace and blessings be upon him).
And the Companions used to sacrifice, the man among them with one sheep for himself and his family. So what many people do today is extravagance,And we say to these people who sacrifice with these sacrifices: If you have surplus wealth, there are people in need of you on the earth from the Muslims, like Bosnia and Herzegovina, and also in Africa many cities of this kind, and also in the Russian republics that were liberated from the grip of communism, they have much need.
