The Meaning of the Hadith: (I will not find one of you reclining on his couch)

Meaning of the Hadith: (I will not find one of you reclining on his couch)

Your Eminence, the Shaykh! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (None of you should sit reclining on his couch saying: This is the Book of Allah; whatever we find therein as lawful, we have made lawful, and whatever we find therein as forbidden, we have made forbidden. Do I not have the Qur'an and its like with it?) What is the meaning of his saying: (reclining on his couch)? And is there evidence in this hadith for the obligation of following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? And if that is the case, what is the meaning of the statement of the scholars of usul al-fiqh and jurists: The one who performs the sunnah is rewarded, and the one who leaves it is not punished?

As for the wording of the hadith, it is not as the questioner said: (None of you should sit on his couch),Rather He said: (I will not find one of you reclining on his couch), and this is a warning from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a person should be in this state and condition, having such arrogance and pride that he reclines on his couch, when a matter comes from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), he says: I do not know; whatever we found in the Book of Allah, we followed.

Meaning: We do not follow the sunnah, and this is a warning from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that a person should be in this state,And for this he said: (Do I not have the Qur'an and its like with it?), and that is the sunnah,As Allah the Exalted said:
And Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and has taught you that which you did not know. And ever has the favor of Allah upon you been great.
[An-Nisa: 113],The scholars said: The meaning of wisdom here is the sunnah,By the evidence of his saying:
and has taught you that which you did not know. And ever has the favor of Allah upon you been great.وَعَلَّمَكَ مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ تَعْلَمُ وَكَانَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكَ عَظِيماً
[An-Nisa: 113].
And it is known that rejecting the authentic, established sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is exactly like rejecting the Qur'an; because what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought of rulings is just as what came in the Qur'an of rulings, for he is the Messenger of Allah (Mighty and Majestic),So whoever says: I do not accept except what came in the Qur'an,We said: You have fallen into this state which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) warned his ummah against.

Then we say to him: Your rejection of what the Messenger brought is a rejection of what the Qur'an brought; For Allah the Exalted said:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allahمَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ
[An-Nisa: 80],And he said:
And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hellوَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ
[Al-Jinn: 23],And Allah the Exalted said:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love youقُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ
[Al-Imran: 31],And Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا
[Al-Hashr: 7], and other numerous verses indicating the obligation of following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

And as for the sunnah, the sunnah has two terms: A general term and a specific term.
As for the general term, the sunnah is the comprehensive way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), including the obligatory, the recommended, and others. And from that is the saying of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): [From the sunnah, if a man marries a virgin, he stays with her for seven days and then divides his time, and if he marries a woman who has been married before, he stays with her for three days and then divides his time] This sunnah is obligatory.
As for the specific term, it is the term of the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them); where they divided the rulings of the Shari'ah into five categories: Obligatory, sunnah, forbidden, disliked, and permissible. They divided it thus to clarify what the Shari'ah has made binding; so it is obligatory to do if it is obligatory, and obligatory to leave if it is forbidden, and what is below that is sunnah in what is commanded and disliked in what is prohibited.
And upon this, there is no problem,So the sunnah is now of two types: General and specific,The general: It is that which is intended to mean the comprehensive way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), including the obligatory and the recommended.

As for the specific: So it is what the jurists agreed upon, where they said: The sunnah is that if a person does it, he is rewarded for it, and if he leaves it, he is not punished.
