The ruling on the follower praying beside the imam if he finds no place in the row
What is the ruling on a follower who finds no place in the row and stands to the right of the imam? And if something happens to the imam, is it permissible for him to lead the worshippers?
The Sunnah is for the imam to stand ahead of the followers if there are two or more, and it is not befitting for anyone to stand beside the imam except in cases of extreme necessity, such as if the mosque is full and one finds no place except next to the imam, in which case there is no harm. If there are two and they need to be beside the imam, let one be on the right and the other on the left, and let them not both be on his right, as the original prescription was that if there were three, the imam would be between the two. Then that was abrogated, and the prescription became that the two should be behind him.
As for what some of the common people now believe, that if two men need to be with the imam, they should both be on his right, this has no basis. Yes, if there is only one, he should not stand except on his right.
As for if something happens to the imam and he leaves the prayer, he may say to some of the followers: "So-and-so! Step forward and complete the prayer with them."
If he does not do so, the followers may put one of them forward, or they may complete the prayer individually.
