Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And He is the Forgiving, the Loving)

Allah the Exalted said:
(14) And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate, (15) Honorable Owner of the Throne,وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ * ذُو الْعَرْشِ الْمَجِيدُ
[al-Buruj:14-15] .
And He is the Forgiver.وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ
Meaning: The One who possesses forgiveness; and forgiveness is covering the sin and pardoning it, so forgiveness is not merely covering the sin; rather, it is covering it and not holding one accountable for it,As came in the authentic hadith: (Indeed, Allah isolates His believing servant on the Day of Resurrection and confronts him with his sins, until he acknowledges them and confesses to them,And Allah, (Mighty and Majestic), says: I have covered them from you in this world, and I am forgiving them for you today) .

Our sins are many: Sins of the heart.
And sins of the tongue.
And sins of action, how numerous they are! But Allah the Exalted – and praise be to Allah – covers them.
It is mentioned that the Children of Israel, when one of them committed a sin, would find it written on the door of his house, as a disgrace and a shame – may Allah protect us from that –; but we – and praise be to Allah – Allah has covered us, so we repent to Allah and seek forgiveness for the sins, so their traces are erased permanently,And for this he said:
And He is the Forgiver.وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ
[al-Buruj:14] : Meaning the One who covers the sins of His servants and overlooks them,
The Loving.الْوَدُودُ
[al-Buruj:14] : Derived from al-wad,And al-wad: which is pure love, so He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), is the Loving.
And what is the meaning of the Loving? Does it mean that He is loved, or that He is a lover?
It encompasses both meanings,Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Himيا أيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَنْ يَرْتَدَّ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ دِينِهِ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ
[al-Ma'idah:54] So He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), is a lover; He loves deeds, He loves people, and He loves places.

And He is also loved, loved by His awliya (close friends of Allah):
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love youقُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ
[Ali 'Imran:31] .
So the more a person follows the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the more beloved he is to Allah, so He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), is a lover and He is also loved,Meaning: that He loves and is loved, He, (Glorified and Exalted is He), loves deeds, He loves the workers, He loves people,Meaning: that the love of Allah may be attached to a specific person, such as the saying of the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) on the day of Khaybar: (I will give the banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love) So the people spent the night, then they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning, all hoping to be given it,So he said: (Where is 'Ali ibn Abi Talib? They said: He was complaining of his eyes, so he called for him, and he came, so he spat in his eyes, and he was cured as if he had never had any pain – immediately –, then he gave him the banner,And he said: Proceed on your pace, until you descend upon their camp, then call them to Islam) .

The point is His saying: (Who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love) Here he affirmed that Allah loves this specific man, who is 'Ali ibn Abi Talib.
And when he sent a man on a raid, he used to recite for them in the prayer,And he concludes by reciting:
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
[al-Ikhlas:1] When they returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they informed him of that; because this action of his was not known, that whenever a person recites in the prayer, he makes his last recitation:
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
[al-Ikhlas:1] So he said: Ask him: For what reason was he doing that! So they asked him,So he said: It is an attribute of Allah, and I love to recite it,So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Inform him that Allah loves him) Here you find that the love of Allah has been attached to a specific person.
And the love of Allah may be attached to specific people by their attributes,Such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:
indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ
[al-Tawbah:4] .

and His saying, the Exalted:
indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ
[al-Baqarah:195] .

and His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفّاً كَأَنَّهُمْ بُنْيَانٌ مَرْصُوصٌ
[al-Saff:4] This does not contain a specific person; but it contains a person described by an attribute.
Likewise, Allah, (Glorified and Exalted is He), loves places; so the most beloved places to Allah are His mosques.

And the Prophet (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) informed: (That Makkah is the most beloved place to Allah) So this love is attached to places.
So Allah the Exalted loves and is loved,And for this he said:
And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الْوَدُودُ
[al-Buruj:14] .
