Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And in the earth are signs for those who are certain)
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: [Al-Dhariyat: 20].
(And in the earth are signs for those who are certain) Allah the Mighty and Majestic did not specify these signs; rather, they were mentioned in the indefinite form to encompass every sign in the earth, whether the signs are in the events that occur in it, or in the nature and composition of the earth itself. Indeed, there are great signs in the earth in terms of its composition. As Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Al-Ra'd: 4] You will find that a single stone contains several minerals, and it is one stone. And you will sometimes see in the mountains [Fatir: 27].
And you will find in it soft earth, soft and pliable earth, and hard earth, among other things known by geologists as great signs. There are signs in terms of the events that occur in it, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and others. There are signs, also, in terms of the nature of the atmosphere, such as heat and cold, stormy winds, cold winds, and warm winds, among other things. When a person reflects on these, he knows thereby the power of Allah the Mighty and Majestic on one hand, and He knows His wisdom and mercy, also, on the other hand. This is because the signs of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, are observed by man not only in terms of power and greatness, but also in terms of wisdom and mercy. This is because everything you find is suitable for its place and time, and everything you find is a trace of the mercy of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He.
The important point is that the word (signs) is found to be a general indefinite term for all the signs that occur in the earth, and for all that is in it in terms of its nature and composition, and so on.
(Signs for those who are certain) means: for those who are certain of the existence of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and His greatness and majesty. As for one who doubts, may Allah protect us from that, he will not benefit from these signs. Rather, these signs may be a harm to him. Indeed, the cosmic or legislative signs may be a good for a person, or they may be an evil. And listen to the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Al-Tawbah: 124] meaning: from the Qur'an [Al-Tawbah: 124-125].
Likewise, the cosmic signs: some people benefit from them and use them as evidence for the signs of Allah the Mighty and Majestic contained in them. And some people are the opposite; what they find of signs leads them to atheism, may Allah protect us from that. And for this he said: [Al-Dhariyat: 20] meaning: it is not for every person, but for the one who is certain. As for the doubter, the hesitant one, and the disbeliever, he will not benefit from these signs.
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]
وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ(And in the earth are signs for those who are certain) Allah the Mighty and Majestic did not specify these signs; rather, they were mentioned in the indefinite form to encompass every sign in the earth, whether the signs are in the events that occur in it, or in the nature and composition of the earth itself. Indeed, there are great signs in the earth in terms of its composition. As Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And within the land are neighboring plots
وَفِي الْأَرْضِ قِطَعٌ مُتَجَاوِرَاتٌtracts, white and red of varying shades and [some] extremely black.
جُدَدٌ بِيضٌ وَحُمْرٌ مُخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهَا وَغَرَابِيبُ سُودٌAnd you will find in it soft earth, soft and pliable earth, and hard earth, among other things known by geologists as great signs. And whenever a surah is revealed
وَإِذَا مَا أُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةٌthere are among the hypocrites those who say, "Which of you has this increased faith?" As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith, while they are rejoicing. (125) But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil. And they will have died while they are disbelievers.
Likewise, the cosmic signs: some people benefit from them and use them as evidence for the signs of Allah the Mighty and Majestic contained in them.
