The ruling on one who leads the people in their residence while he is a traveler
A traveler leads a congregation of residents; what should he do while he is inside the city? Does he shorten the prayer or complete it?
The Sunnah is to shorten the prayer; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with the people of Makkah in the year of the Conquest, and he used to pray two rak'ahs with them and say: (Complete it, for we are a traveling people) meaning: travelers, so he prays two rak'ahs and tells them before starting the prayer: I will pray two rak'ahs, and when I conclude the prayer, you should complete it. It is recommended for a person to do this because this Sunnah is currently dormant,Meaning: If a person did it and was not one who is pointed to as a scholar, people would shout in his face and accuse him of error. But if he was one who is pointed to as a scholar and they knew he did it with knowledge, they would benefit from it and know the Sunnah. Just as people in the past used to reject the prostration for forgetfulness after the taslim and considered it to invalidate the prayer, when people came to know it and the imams began to do it, it became a customary matter among people and was no longer rejected. Therefore, the dormant Sunnahs should be revived by the students of knowledge whose words and actions are given attention, for: (Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam will have the reward of it and the reward of everyone who acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection) .
