The Shaykh : Now we will read to you the hadith numbered forty-five in our copy, which is an authentic hadith. It is the statement: And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said, "There were two men from the Bili tribe of Quda'ah who embraced Islam with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and one of them was martyred, while the other was delayed by a year." Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah said, "I saw the one who was delayed enter Paradise before the martyr."
Similarly, here a phrase has been omitted, either by the author or by the scribe or the printer, which is "I was shown Paradise," so the phrase becomes: Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah said, "I was shown Paradise, and I saw the one who was delayed enter [Parise]."
This means he saw in a dream that he entered Paradise, or he saw Paradise and saw in it this man who was delayed in death compared to the martyr. He said, "He entered Paradise before the martyr, so I was amazed by that. Then I woke up and mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Similarly, here the phrase is correct as in the source of the hadith: "I mentioned that to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Did he not fast Ramadan after him and pray six thousand rak'ahs and so many rak'ahs of voluntary prayer? أليس قد صام بعده رمضان وصلى ستة آلاف ركعة وكَذاوكذا ركعة صلاة سنة
." Ahmad narrated it with a good chain, and Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and al-Bayhaqi, all of them from Talhah in a similar but longer form. Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibban added at the end:
The difference between them is greater than the difference between heaven and earth. فما بينهما أبعد ما بين السماء والأرض
Sunan Ibn Majah 3925Sahih (Darussalam)
.
This hadith is actually a historical and realistic explanation of that authentic hadith
He whose life is long and his deeds are good. خيركم من طال عمره وحسن عمله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2329Hasan (Darussalam)
. So these are two men who embraced Islam during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them was martyred, dying in the cause of Allah as a martyr, and the other lived for a full year after him. Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah, who is one of the ten promised Paradise as is well known, saw Paradise in a dream and saw in it that man who was delayed in death and did not die as a martyr. He saw that he had entered Paradise, meaning before the one who died as a martyr. So in reality, as he said, he was amazed by that, because it is assumed that the martyr is the first to enter. He was amazed by what he saw, contrary to what he had thought, where he saw the one delayed in death without being martyred precede the one who died as a martyr in entering Paradise...
