The Shaykh spoke about the sitting of rest

The Shaykh : Therefore, the Muslim must adopt a pure creed. As they say, the matter is complex. The Muslim who is enthusiastic about following the Sunnah must receive it as the Muslims before us did. Regarding the sitting of rest that we were discussing, there are two opinions. We cannot now give a third opinion; there are two. One opinion is that the sitting of rest is a recommended practice (sunnah) that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) performed. The second opinion is that it is disliked (makruh). You asked about those who said it is disliked: do they have knowledge of this hadith? A large portion of the early scholars did not have knowledge of this hadith, just as with many other hadiths. This is one of the reasons for disagreement in the Ummah: a scholar comes across a hadith and issues a ruling based on it, while another scholar does not reach that hadith, so he exercises independent legal reasoning (ijtihad) and contradicts the hadith, and he is rewarded in any case. But another group came across this hadith yet interpreted it in a way we consider incorrect. They say, yes, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) sat the sitting of rest, but that was because he was heavy, meaning his body became heavy due to old age. Old age is a natural matter; a person’s energy weakens, so his body becomes heavy, heavy in walking, heavy in sitting, heavy in standing up, and so on. Some of them interpreted this hadith this way. We can acknowledge their knowledge, but they did not hit the truth and correctness. The sitting of rest was performed by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as a legislative act and a recommended practice. Therefore, those who transmitted this sitting from the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are more knowledgeable than these later scholars who interpreted the sitting as the Messenger having done it because he was heavy. If that were the case, those who witnessed it would have transmitted to us that they did it out of weakness.
And I am pleased, on this occasion, with what Imam Malik narrated in al-Muwatta: Thus, do not fold your legs and do not spread them; he extended his legs, and they saw nothing but the legs extended around him. So I extended my legs because of an illness, so you should not do this action. The point is, as they transmitted to us, that Mu'adh extended his legs due to an excuse, and the narrator is one person. What about ten of the Companions of the Messenger who transmitted to us this sitting of the Messenger, and none of them said he did it because of old age?
Okay, others, please.
And I am pleased, on this occasion, with what Imam Malik narrated in al-Muwatta:
That Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Yemen, prayed with them one day, and when he sat for the tashahhud, he extended his leg.
أن معاذ بن جبل رضي الله عنه حينما أرسله الرسول عليه السلام إلى اليمن فصلى بهم يوما ولما جلس للتشهد مد رجلهWhen he finished the prayer, he said to them, why did you do this? They said, we saw you do it, so we did it. He said: I have an illness.
لما سلم قال لهم لماذا فعلتم هكذا ؟ قالوا رأيناك فعلت فعلنا قال: أنا بي مرضOkay, others, please.
