Discussion of the first tool used by the innovators to demolish the texts of the attributes, which is metaphorical interpretation.

The Shaykh : Among the examples where they interpreted the hadiths with an interpretation of demolition, not an interpretation of the truth into metaphor, but rather the use of ahad hadiths that do not constitute a proof, are the Mu'tazilah and their like from the Khawarij, the Ibadis, and others like them who say that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not seen by the believers in the Hereafter. This is what the Mu'tazilah say; they say this while knowing that in the Noble Qur'an there are two verses that establish this blessing, after which there is no greater blessing, which Allah bestows upon His believing servants in Paradise above it, namely the seeing of Allah in the Hereafter. As some of the later generations who followed the Salaf said: "The believers see Him without asking how, without likening Him to creation, and without any kind of example." There are two verses, one of which is more explicit than the other. The first is the saying of the Blessed and Exalted:
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord. وجوه يومئذ ناضرة * إلى ربها ناظرة
[Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23]
This is an explicit verse. What did the Mu'tazilah and their like do with it? They applied the first tool, which is ta'wil (figurative interpretation), a metaphorical interpretation. How did they interpret this verse concerning the unseen with the unseen of the unseen, namely Allah, Lord of the worlds? Just as they interpreted a verse concerning people, concerning humans and stones, in Surat Yusuf, for example:
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful," وسئل القرية التي كنا فيها والعير التي أقبلنا فيها وإنا لصادقون
[Yusuf 12:82]
And ask the city in which we were وسئل القرية التي كنا فيها
[Yusuf 12:82]
What does the village speak? The village does not speak. So this is a metaphor that is necessary, because the definitive evidence has established that this statement cannot be understood on its apparent meaning.
