Discussion on the obligation of interpreting the Qur'an and the Sunnah in accordance with the practice of the Salaf.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, here we move on to another new topic, which is: the meaning of all this is that the Sunnah explains the Qur'an, and that the Sunnah, like the Qur'an, must be interpreted in accordance with the practice of the righteous Salaf, who are the three generations attested to as the best,
The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them خير الناس قرني ، ثم الذي يلونهم ، ثم الذين يلونهم
; that is, the Companions, the Successors, and those who followed them. So, there is no way for a Muslim to be clear in his religion, and to be upon what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions were upon, except through one of the sciences of Islam, namely the science of hadith. This is because through the science of hadith, we can know the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace be upon him), and only through it can we know what his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were upon, and only through it can we know what the Successors, who followed the Companions, and then the Successors of the Successors, were upon. So, the science of hadith is the science upon which the correct Islamic creed is built. If we want to understand the first source, which is the Qur'an, we must know what the Companions said about any text from this first source, which is the Qur'an, and there is no way to do that except through the path of narration and the science of hadith. And if we want to interpret a text from the hadiths of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), likewise, there is no way to do that, first, to know whether this hadith is authentic or not, except through the path of hadith. Then, to know what the Companions said in interpreting the hadith, there is no way to do that except through the path of the science of hadith. Then, to know what the path of the believers was in interpreting these texts from the Book and the Sunnah, except by knowing the path of narration from the Khalaf to the Salaf. From here comes the saying of the scholars, who always and forever recite this saying:
"And all good is in following those who came before, *** And all evil is in the innovation of those who came after."
This is because these Salaf are the proof in clarifying the straight path and in clarifying the intended meaning of the Book and the Sunnah from the correct meanings. So they said: "And all good is in following those who have passed before," and this is from their high estimation of the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the previous verse:
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
[An-Nisa 4:115]
, and contrary to this severe warning is the divine promise; which is that whoever follows the Messenger and follows the path of the believers, for him is Paradise and for him is honor in this Paradise; because he acted upon what he was commanded in the Book and the Sunnah of following the Qur'an and following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and following the path of the believers.
So, this reality must be known well so that we do not go astray with those who go astray, so that we do not become Qur'aniyyun only, not recognizing Islam except through faith in the Qur'an only, and this is a deficient faith that is not sufficient; because the Qur'an itself commanded following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and obeying him.
Then, so that we do not become with the old or new sects like the Qadiyyaniyyun, who believe in the Sunnah but they also interpret it in accordance with the interpretation of the path of the believers. We oppose all these sects and we are with the righteous Salaf in faith in the Qur'an and faith in the Sunnah and following them in their interpretation of the texts of the Book and the Sunnah. And this is among the meanings of His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He), addressing His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with His saying:
Say, “This is my path; I call to Allah with insight, قُلْ هَذِهِ سَبِيلِي أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ عَلَى بَصِيرَةٍ
, the point is,
with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him." عَلَى بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِي وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
[Yusuf 12:108]
.
I ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to make us among those who proceed in their understanding of the Book and the Sunnah with clarity, and that will not be except by following the path of the first believers who transmitted to us the Qur'an in its wording and its meaning, so that we do not come with new meanings claiming that these are the meanings that Allah intends, but rather the truth is that the meanings we received from the Salaf are the intended meanings of the texts of the Book and the Sunnah. I ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to grant us success in this following so that we may be among the successful and the prosperous, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
