The questioner : He says: What is your opinion, O honorable Shaykh, about taking a Hajj on behalf of another while he has a debt, and he will use that remaining amount to pay off his debt or for his livelihood?
The Shaykh : In terms of it not harming the people of religion, we might say that it is permissible, because this person who took money to perform Hajj with it will benefit from it to pay off the debt. However, a matter presents itself to me regarding this, which is the intention. If this man performs Hajj for the sake of the money, and he does not take the money for the sake of Hajj, consider with me: if a person performs Hajj for the sake of money, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Whoever performs Hajj to take money has no share in the Hereafter", meaning he has no portion in the Hereafter, because Allah said in His Book:[Hud 11:15-16]. So the problem here is that this pilgrim performed Hajj to take money, so his intention in the work of the Hereafter became the worldly life; he made the work of the Hereafter a means to the worldly life. The correct opposite is to make the worldly life a means to the work of the Hereafter. So we say to this brother: Do not take the money to perform Hajj so that you can pay off your debt, because in this state you only intended the money, making Hajj like a trade, like a commodity you want to profit from.
