Clarification of the criterion for differing from the disbelievers and its forms.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Because in many Islamic lands, people still maintain Islamic dress, even if it varies in form. So let us say, suppose that is the case, meaning it has become common clothing. Here a new legal ruling arises: the Muslim is not only obligated not to imitate the disbelievers, but he is obligated to intentionally differ from the disbelievers. He should differ from them in something that causes no harm if a Muslim were to do it, but even so, he should intentionally differ from the disbeliever.
The evidence for this is a wonderful hadith, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them. إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون شعورهم فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
This means that it is part of Allah’s cosmic sunnah in His servants that He decreed gray hair for humans, whether male or female, Muslim or disbeliever. When a person reaches a certain age, which varies from country to country, the whiteness of the hair, which is gray hair, must appear. You may find a gray-haired Muslim and a gray-haired disbeliever, whether Jewish, Christian, or an atheist disbeliever. Gray hair unites them; it is not the doing of the gray-haired person. If they had any power over the matter, especially these disbelievers, none of them would ever have gray hair, because gray hair is abhorrent to them. As for the Muslims, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in some hadiths that gray hair on the face of a Muslim is light.
In any case, this is a decree from Allah for people to have gray hair, without distinction between a Muslim and a disbeliever. So if we see a Muslim who has gray hair and his disbelieving neighbor who has gray hair, we do not say this is imitating him, because it is not his doing, but rather the doing of the Lord of the Worlds. Nevertheless, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Differ from the Jews and the Christians خالفوا اليهود والنصارى
,
Dye your hair, for they do not dye it completely. اصبغوا شعوركم فإنهم لا يسبغون
. So with this hadith, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) established for us this important principle in the path of Muslims’ eagerness to maintain their Muslim identity, even in something where, if one of them had the power, he would not have gray hair as we said, but he has the power to dye. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) says to the Muslim: Dye your hair and differ in that from the disbeliever, whether Jewish, Christian, or otherwise.
