Explaining the Danger of Religious Innovations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own selves and from the badness of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He leaves to misguide, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger,
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
I would have liked to speak yesterday, when Professor Ali delivered his remarks on bid'ah (religious innovation) and emphasized the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
, and then Brother Abu Ahmad followed up with another fine speech in which he explained the danger of bid'ah and its introduction into the religion. I would have liked to say a word that might be beneficial, if Allah wills, on this serious issue. Now that I have recovered somewhat, I feel it is obligatory for me to say what had been on my mind recently, so I say:
The topic of the hadith: “Every bid'ah (religious innovation) is misguidance” or
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
, many Islamic preachers think is a simple matter that does not warrant much discussion, as we Salafi preachers do. So, to clarify the seriousness of this issue, I say: We must know that it has a very great connection to the previous research we alluded to, which we mentioned must be a reality in the hearts of Islamic groups; namely, making the sovereignty of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) a reality in their hearts before they fill the earth with shouting that it must be a reality on earth, while we have not yet established it in our hearts.
There is no doubt that whether bid'ah (religious innovation) is prescribed or not is closely related to the previous topic. If it is not prescribed, as we believe, then we have introduced into the Shari'ah what is not part of it... what He did not prescribe for us, but rather some who preferred innovation in the religion based on doubts that appeared to them. From here you can see the seriousness of this issue; it is his saying (peace be upon him):
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
; because the one who contradicts this explicit text condemning all bid'ah is, at the same time, leading people to draw near to Allah by means that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not prescribe.
And when we affirm this fact, we know well that those who prefer some bid'ah (religious innovations), or who divide bid'ah into five categories after their general division into good bid'ah and bad bid'ah, we do not know that they have the evidence they claim; rather, it is doubts. If the knowledgeable Muslim knows the truth of the matter, it becomes clear to him that they are:
like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water
[An-Nur 24:39]
.
So I found it strengthening of the previous research yesterday to mention some of those evidences referred to, which the majority of shaykhs today cling to and rely on in saying that there is good bid'ah (religious innovation) in Islam. The most famous of these doubts is that authentic hadith, namely his saying (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him):
Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam, he will have its reward and the reward of everyone who works by it until the Day of Resurrection, without anything being deducted from their rewards. And whoever introduces a bad practice in Islam, he will have its sin and the sin of everyone who works by it until the Day of Resurrection, without anything being deducted from their sins
.
There is no doubt about the authenticity of this hadith, but the doubt, all the doubt, is in their use of this hadith to argue that the Messenger (peace be upon him) established by it that there is good bid'ah (religious innovation) in Islam. This is clarified from two angles or more. The first angle is looking at the reason for the coming of this hadith. If we know it, it becomes clear to us at first glance that this argument is a clear, indeed blatant, error. That is because the reason for the hadith, as stated in Sahih Muslim in both text and reason, is narrated by Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when some Bedouins came to him, wearing their cloaks and carrying their swords, most of them from Muzir, indeed all of them from Muzir. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that, his face changed color, then he addressed the Companions and recited to them the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
(9) O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers. (10) And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."
[Al-Munafiqun 63:9-10]
, and he said (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) among the things he said in his sermon:
A man gave charity with a dirham, a dinar, a sa' of wheat, or a sa' of barley
.
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had not finished his sermon when a man from those present stood up and went away, then returned carrying in the corner of his garment whatever charity he could manage in food and dirhams, and placed it in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the rest of his Companions saw what their companion had done, each of them also stood up and brought whatever charity he could manage. So there gathered in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mountains of food and dirhams. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that, his face brightened as if it were gold-plated silver—a metaphor for the fact that the Messenger (peace be upon him), after being sad about the poverty of those Bedouins he had seen, his face brightened with joy and happiness when he saw his Companions (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) hasten to respond to his encouragement to give charity. And he said (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) at that time:
He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently
Sahih Muslim 1017a
to the end of the hadith.
