A talk on seeking religious or worldly knowledge.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... What is the hadith?
Whoever seeks knowledge for a worldly gain مَن طلب العلم لعَرَضٍ من الدنيا
It is not worldly knowledge.

The questioner : ... Meaning.

The Shaykh : I mean, he seeks religious knowledge for the sake of this world; he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise; this is the case.

The questioner : ... Not for the sake of the religion, meaning?

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed, this hadith is authentic, and the other verses and hadiths confirm it:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ
[Al-Bayyinah 98:5]
, so whoever seeks religious knowledge for the sake of this world will have no share in the Hereafter.
There is no god but Allah.

The questioner : By Allah, worldly knowledge may be required; a person should learn it, not for the sake of this world, because Muslims are required to learn any existing knowledge... meaning, they should not lag behind in... engineering, medicine, and so on.

The Shaykh : Of course, this is a collective obligation; if some people fulfill it, it is lifted from the rest, and if they all fail to fulfill it, they are all sinful.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes.
