Is the practice of a Companion a proof?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : To what extent is the practice of a Companion a proof?

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : To what extent is the practice of a Companion accepted? May Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : This is one of the fine points of scholarly issues. My personal opinion is that if there is no evidence compelling the one who comes upon that report to contradict it, the original rule is to follow it. If evidence arises indicating that it should be contradicted, we contradict it. I give as an example a well-known hadith in Muslim from Anas ibn Malik
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited drinking while standing. It was said to him, "What do you say about eating?" He said, "It is worse." نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم عن الشرب قائما قيل له أرأيت الأكل؟ قال شر
I accept this answer from this Companion because I do not find in the Sunnah anything indicating the permissibility of eating while standing, especially since they used to eat and drink while sitting. When such a clear question and eloquent answer came, he said
Eating is worse. الأكل شر
and we did not find in the Sunnah anything contradicting it. So we are reassured by this answer and issue rulings based on it. This is an example. There is a simple exception added to this, which is what is established in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar that they used to eat while walking. We say the answer to this is clear: the permissibility of eating while standing, combining the report of Ibn 'Umar that they used to eat while walking in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the opposite of that, which is exactly what is in this report from Ibn 'Umar. Its full text is that he says, "We used to drink while standing and eat while walking in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." When the explicit prohibition was raised to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding drinking while standing, we understood the report of Ibn 'Umar that they used to drink while standing in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to mean that that was in a time when it was permitted, as it is established from the Messenger (peace be upon him) that he drank while standing on more than one occasion. Then, when we did not find anything contradicting his report regarding eating while walking, and did not find anything contradicting it, we said by its implication and indication. As for eating while standing, when the report I mentioned earlier from Anas that it is worse than drinking while standing came, we acted according to all these things within the limits of the rules we understood from the scholars. This is my answer to what you asked?
Al-Halabi : Our Shaykh, I saw in the history of Ibn Ma'in, in the narration of Ibn Makhraj, I saw a criticism of the report of Ibn 'Umar.
