Is artificial insemination between spouses permissible?

The questioner : Is it permissible for a couple who are legally married to conceive through artificial insemination?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible, after considering the matter, unless the spouses are doctors, or at least one of them is, and one of them performs the insemination with his own hand. As for insemination between spouses performed by men or women who are strangers to them, this is not permissible. The matter, in that it is artificial insemination, has nothing wrong with it in itself, just as hatching is fine for chickens. However, because of the potential for deception and the loss of lineage that may arise from this insemination, it is not permissible. Therefore, we said that if we assume the spouses are doctors, or at least one of them is, and one extracts the fluid of the other and they perform the artificial insemination, and there is safety from these harms, then it is permissible. Anything other than that is not permissible.
