The ruling on placing a screen in the mosque and setting up a separate section for women?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Even though it is better for women to pray in their homes, and their prayer in the mosque is less meritorious, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not place a barrier or partition, such as a wall or curtain, between the men and the women. Rather, he organized the prayer of the men and arranged the rows of the men in a manner different from how he arranged the rows of the women, as is known to you from his saying (peace be upon him):
the best of the men’s row is the first and the worst of them is the last, but the best of the women’s rows is the last and the worst of them is the first. خير صفوف الرجال أولها وشرها آخرها وخير صفوف النساء آخرها وشرها أولها
Sunan Abi Dawud 678Sahih (Al-Albani)
Therefore, establishing a separate prayer area for women is contrary to the Sunnah, in the sense that many people imagine that this is a form of protection for women and a barrier between them and the men. We say that the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). It would have been easy for him to separate the men and women in the mosque with a wall, even a modest wall made of palm fronds, but he did not do any of that. I know what is done today in many of the mosques built in the modern era, where a curtain is placed in some of the modestly built mosques. As for the mosques where large sums of money are spent, a wall is built there, which may be constructed in a way that has holes, so that the women can see the men but the men cannot see them. There is absolutely no need for such an effort, especially since the implication of this effort is approval of the state of many, or rather most, Muslim women who do not adhere to the Shari'ah-prescribed jilbab (outer garment). It is as if the men, when they see that women are neglecting and being lazy about fulfilling the obligation of the Shari'ah-prescribed jilbab, have made a substitute in the mosque by placing this physical screen between the men and the women. Here it is said:
"Sa'd drove them in, and Sa'd was wrapped up. This is not, O Sa'd, how camels are driven in."
The Shaykh: The solution should not be to accept the reality and then try to address this bad reality in a way other than the way the Messenger (peace be upon him) addressed it. How did the Messenger (peace be upon him) separate the men and women in the most sacred of places and the best of places, namely the mosques, as I mentioned earlier? The best rows for women are the last ones, from the back to the back. He did not place this physical screen between the women and the men, but he placed a physical screen on the women when they left their homes and went out on their paths until they reached the point of entering the mosques. The jilbab is what veils them from the men. Therefore, the alternative to this separate prayer area for women is to remind women of the obligation of the jilbab. This is a reminder:
Indeed, the reminder benefits the believers. فإن الذكرى تنفع المؤمنين
I do not know if I have taken up your time, and perhaps you have other questions more important than this observation. Yes, indeed.

The questioner : Likewise, this observation is good before starting this project, and may Allah take these observations from us, if Allah wills. The Shaykh : If there are other observations, may Allah accept them, and may Allah take them into consideration.

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you.

The questioner : By Allah, we are very pleased with that. If there are any other observations, may Allah accept them, before the start of this project, please share them, so that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) may benefit us with them.

The Shaykh : We ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to inspire us and you with the truth in what we say and what we do. What do you have?

The questioner : We have some questions prepared by our noble brother Abu Suhayb, and may Allah present them to you, so that Allah may benefit us with them.
