The Narration of Hudhayfah and Ibn Mas'ud in Condemning Innovations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We mentioned to you, in the last thing we mentioned, the narration of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman: "Any act of worship that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform, do not perform it." Another narration is from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "Follow, follow, and do not innovate, for you have been sufficed with the old matter." "Follow"—most people do not give weight to this matter of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), either out of ignorance or denial: "Follow and do not innovate, for you have been sufficed." What does "you have been sufficed" mean? It means that our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) has legislated for you from the religion, from obedience, and from worship, such that if the most devout person among us, O Muslims, after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), were among us, he would not be able to perform all the acts of worship that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) legislated through the tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Now I ask: Do you know who the most devout person is? It has come in the authentic hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The most devout of people is Dawud أعبد الناس داود
(peace and blessings be upon him).
The most devout of people is Dawud أعبد الناس داود
This is the hadith in this concise wording. And this leads us to affirm what we have previously explained, that "adding to the good is good" is itself a misguided innovation. Their saying that "adding to the good is itself misguidance" is because it contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah. How can "adding to the good be good" when Allah says:
This day I have perfected for you your religion اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
to the end of the aforementioned evidence.
The last of which is His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And he who turns away from my Sunnah, he has no relation with Me فمن رغب عن سنتي فليس مني
Sahih Muslim 1401
