Naming the forbidden thing by a name other than its own to deceive people into thinking it is permissible, such as intoxicants and songs.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : One of the ways Satan enters his enemy, man, and schemes against him is that he presents names to be applied to things that contradict the Shari'ah; but he beautifies the words, so some people are deceived and name these forbidden things by a name other than their own. In the present age, there are many, many examples of this. No doubt you have heard at some point that some people call intoxicants "alcoholic beverages." Have you heard of this or not?

The questioner : I have heard of it, and it is written on the bottles.

The Shaykh : This is exactly from that category. They also name it by a name other than its own. I want to bring up something with you that is a bit more specific. There are songs they call "Islamic songs."

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Do you see? So, in the present age, when what is called today the "awakening" occurred, the people who want to play with humans exploit this awakening as a name; as for the transaction, no. These "Islamic songs" contain words that, if a person were to recite them, and he were to consider them permissible and know what is in them, he would be a disbeliever; because they contain shirk (associating partners with Allah) and misguidance. Perhaps you have heard, for example, from the songs they used to sing in the past in praise of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), the words of al-Busiri:
"For from Your generosity is the world and its like, and from Your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
The Shaykh : Did you hear these verses in your time?

The questioner : No, by Allah, I have not heard them.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah; but people seek blessing from these verses today, even to this day. But this is old poetry. Now there is new poetry that contains new meanings in some of it, also meanings that contradict the Islamic Shari'ah. So Satan beautifies for people that these are "Islamic songs" instead of what? The lewd, forbidden songs. And you find them on the same meters and with the same rhyme, only these are "Islamic songs" and those are forbidden songs. Yes.

The questioner : These are without music and those are with music.

The Shaykh : Yes, but look, Satan also gradually led them, so they recently introduced the hand drum into the songs they call "Islamic songs." They introduced the hand drum into them. And here on the radio, we saw in some television sessions a man, unfortunately from Syria.

The questioner : Al-Halabi.

The Shaykh : Ah, al-Halabi al-Tirmidhi is holding the darbuka and sitting singing. And this is forbidden by the consensus of the scholars of the Muslims. So how did the lewd instrument enter into what is called "Islamic songs"? From Satan's cunning with mankind, he surprises them with forbidden things because they are repelled by them. And in this example, we pay one hundred and five instead of this being riba (usury or interest); but go take the need, and the result is the same. This image, as they say, "all roads lead to the mill," as they say. So if we remember the marriage of tahil, and we remember the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the cursing of the Jews when the fats were forbidden to them: they rendered them into tallow, meaning they melted them and sold them and ate their price. Then we add to that what is explicitly stated in the Noble Qur'an regarding their making hunting permissible on the Sabbath; but not by the method of hunting. We know this because it is mentioned in the Noble Qur'an, right?

The questioner : Yes, certainly.

The Shaykh : And yet they were cursed. The form was different; they did not hunt on the Sabbath, but they blocked the channels for the fish that were accustomed to there being nothing to disturb them or expose them to danger. It is an animal, but it has an understanding commensurate with its animality. Yes, so they were cursed. Many Muslims today fall into what the Jews fell into before, and this is the realization of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
You will follow the ways of those before you, span for span and cubit for cubit, and even if they entered into the hole of a scorpion, you would enter it. They said: O Messenger of Allah, the Jews and the Christians? He said: And who else? لتتبعن سنن من قبلكم شبرا بشبر وذراعا بذراع حتى لو دخلوا جحر ضب لدخلتموه ، قالوا اليهود والنصارى يا رسول الله ؟ قال فمن الناس ؟
This organized installment sale today, I think everyone of us, especially those who work in the bank, knows that this is foreign merchandise, is it not?

The questioner : In my store and in a foreign one, meaning you mean the ideas are imported.

The Shaykh : That is it - laughsThe Shaykh : (may Allah have mercy on him) - So this is foreign merchandise without a doubt. In this age, when we were raised due to the colonization of some disbelievers of some Islamic lands, our concepts changed and we were influenced by their tastes and customs. Look at the result now: the merchant in the first era could be more devout than the one who stands in night prayer and fasts by day, while he is selling and buying and earning money. In the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man who is known for his good character has the same degree as someone who stands at night in prayer إن الرجل ليدرك بحسن خلقه درجة قائم الليل صائم النهار
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:26
Now a very simple example: two merchants and one merchandise. One sells on installment at the cash price that his neighbor sells for. His neighbor sells for one cash price, but on installment he adds to it. Which of the two men is better in character?

The questioner : The one who sells for less.
