What is the ruling on visiting a wali and offering him candles and ghee when one of the children falls ill, and you have advised those who do this, so what do you think?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : There is a wali there, and a group visits him and offers him candles and ghee when one of the children falls ill. I have advised them to leave this evil, but they did not heed me. They say, and they have said: “He cures the sick.” What should we do? Advise us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The question is not clear.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Is this wali alive, or do you mean the grave of a wali?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If you mean the grave of a wali, there is no doubt that their action is an evil, and that the dead person does not benefit anyone with anything. It is obligatory for them to repent to Allah from this action and to seek healing from Him, not from the people of the graves.
As for if he is alive and something is brought to him in which he recites, and the patient is anointed with it or drinks it if it is something that is drunk, then there is nothing wrong with this. But it is obligatory for us to understand who the wali is?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The wali is the one who is a believer in Allah, mindful of Allah, and reverent of the prohibitions of Allah, by His saying:
(62) Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve (63) Those who believed and were fearing Allah
[Yunus 10:62-63]
So everyone who is a believer and mindful of Allah is a wali of Allah. And the status of wali is not attained by claiming it, feigning poverty, and being humble, as some people claim who deceive the common people by appearing in the guise of awliya (close friends of Allah), and they may be among the enemies, and Shaytan helps them with their intent, so the common people think that what happened is a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person), while in reality it is an insult. Therefore, it is obligatory for us to beware of such claimants and not to be deceived by their appearance and feigned poverty, because they deceive the common people with this appearance. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This questioner, Jawhara al-'Ali, says.
