5 - In the category of necks, and they are three: the slave, the mukatab, and the captive

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And in the category of necks. And in the category of necks. What is the meaning of necks? They said: Necks are three: a slave you buy and free from zakah; a slave belonging to someone you buy and free from zakah, there is no harm in that. This is freeing a neck. Is that not so?
The second: a mukatab. And the mukatab is the slave who bought his freedom from his master. Allah the Exalted said:
And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess والذين يبتغون الكتاب مما ملكت أيمانكم
[An-Nur 24:33]
What is it?
then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness فكاتبوهم إن علمتم فيهم خيرا
[An-Nur 24:33]
. So this is a slave who bought his freedom from his master and needs money. He is given money so that he can free himself.
The third: a Muslim who was kidnapped by the disbelievers; they kidnapped him and took him captive, and they said: We will not release him except for a ransom. Is he ransomed from zakah or not? Answer, everyone. Speak up, may Allah reward you. He is ransomed from zakah because this is freeing a neck, just as the slave is freed through manumission, this one is freed from the disbelievers. So this falls under His saying:
and in the freeing of slaves وفي الرقاب
. Yes.
