The questioner : A man prayed the Friday prayer in one of the mosques while traveling, and after the prayer he stood up and prayed the 'Asr prayer shortened, claiming that he was a traveler and that he would head to his hometown before the 'Asr adhan?

The Shaykh : The Friday prayer is an independent prayer that differs from the Zuhr prayer in many matters known to the scholars of knowledge. One of the ways it differs from Zuhr is that it is not permissible to combine 'Asr with it if a person is traveling. This is because the hadiths regarding combining prayers only mention combining Zuhr and 'Asr. The Friday prayer is not called the Zuhr prayer; rather, Zuhr is its substitute if it is missed.
Based on this, I say to this brother who prayed 'Asr with the Friday prayer: Repeat it now as a shortened 'Asr prayer. Because if a man forgets a prayer while traveling, or neglects something of it that obligates him to repeat it, he must make it up as it was obligatory. That is, he makes up the travel prayer if he is in a settled state as two rak'ahs, and vice versa. If he remembers a settled-state prayer while traveling, he makes it up as four rak'ahs. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it من نام عن صلاة نسيها فليصلها إذا ذكرها
His statement:
Let him pray it فليصلها
The pronoun refers to this forgotten prayer, or the one he slept through; it refers to it with its characteristic. So if the missed prayer was shortened, he prays it shortened, and if it was complete, he prays it complete.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
