Seeking Nearness to Allah the Exalted Through Faith in Him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The sixth is seeking nearness to Allah the Exalted through faith. Seeking nearness to the Exalted through faith is faith in the heart. You seek nearness to Allah through your faith, because your faith is the cause for the acceptance of your supplication. Among the evidence for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds ربنا إننا سمعنا مناديا ينادي للإيمان أن آمنوا بربكم فآمنا ربنا فاغفر لنا ذنوبنا وكفر عنا سيئاتنا
[Ali 'Imran 3:193]
His saying
Our Lord, so forgive us ربنا فاغفر لنا
[Ali 'Imran 3:193]
The "fa" (so) here indicates causality and consequence; that is, as a consequence of our faith in the caller, [we say] "forgive us." This is seeking nearness to Allah through what? Through faith in Allah. There is no doubt that faith in Allah is a cause for forgiveness. And listen to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven. من صام رمضان إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه
Sahih al-Bukhari 38
O Allah, make us among these people.
