The story of Abu Sufyan with Heraclius, the King of the Romans, regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : It is not hidden from any of us what happened to Abu Sufyan ibn Harith when he arrived in Sham and Heraclius heard of him. Heraclius was the King of the Romans and the great one of the Romans, and he had heard of him. Heraclius was a clever man, so when he heard of him, and since he was a delegate from Makkah, he summoned him and his companions and asked them what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling people to. Abu Sufyan informed him of what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling people to, such as worshipping Allah, maintaining family ties, excellence in worship, chastity, and other things that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. Listen, my brother. Abu Sufyan did not lie to Heraclius about what he reported regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); rather, he knew the truth, even though Abu Sufyan was an enemy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time. But the Arabs, due to their character and noble morals, consider lying a disgrace, so Abu Sufyan did not like people to talk about him as having lied about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he reported about him. However, Heraclius asked, "Did he ever break a treaty?" meaning, did he not fulfill the covenant? Abu Sufyan saw here an opportunity to disparage the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said:
There was a covenant between us and him, and we do not know what will happen
. The covenant that was between them was the covenant of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Abu Sufyan was saying, "We do not know what will happen," as a euphemism, although he knew with certainty that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most faithful of people in keeping the covenant. Then Heraclius said, "Listen to the great word." Heraclius said to Abu Sufyan:
If what you say is true, then he (the Prophet) will take over the place underneath my two feet.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7196
. Allahu Akbar! Heraclius, the great one of the Romans, said:
If what you say is true, then he will rule what is under these two feet of mine
, even though the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time was not of great standing; in fact, Quraysh had prevented him from entering Makkah to perform 'Umrah. When Abu Sufyan left, he said to his companions, "Indeed:
The cause of Ibn Abi Kabsha has become conspicuous
Sahih al-Bukhari 2978
," meaning his status was elevated. From this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
You have certainly done a grave thing." لقد جئت شيئا إمرا
[Al-Kahf 18:71]
. What does "Imran" mean? It means great, meaning great. So the meaning of "Amira" is that his matter was elevated.
the king of the Romans is afraid of him
Sahih Muslim 1773a
the king of the Romans is afraid of him
Sahih Muslim 1773a
The King of the Romans, meaning that at that time the Romans were considered one of the great powers, and yet they feared the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And I ask now: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rule what is under the feet of Heraclius? Yes, he ruled it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away before Sham was conquered, yes? But he ruled it through his successors and his religion, for his successors conquered Sham and conquered Iraq and reached the east and west of the earth with the religion of Allah. If the Muslim community today had held fast to what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was upon, they would have ruled the east and west of the earth, and the leaders of the West and the East would have feared them.
