The questioner : Is this statement correct? This listener from the State of Kuwait says that the moaning of the sick person is glorification, his crying out is the declaration of God's greatness, and his turning from side to side is jihad in the path of Allah. Is this statement correct?
The Shaykh : This is not correct. In fact, the moaning of the sick person, if it expresses complaint, is forbidden. For this reason, a man entered upon Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) while he was ill and found him moaning. He said to him, "So-and-so from the Tabi'un, and I think it was Tawus, said that the moaning of the sick person is recorded against him." He said this in response to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Qaf 50:18] So (may Allah be pleased with him), I mean Imam Ahmad, refrained from moaning. If the moaning expresses complaint, it is forbidden. If it is due to the nature of the condition and the severity of the illness, the person is not held accountable for it, but he is not rewarded for it either. Likewise, his turning from side to side does not carry any reward. Yes, if there is relief for his body in doing so, then the person is rewarded for seeking relief for his body, because a person seeking relief for his body is a matter for which he is rewarded. It was even reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that if a man eats from his wealth seeking thereby the Face of Allah, he is rewarded, and his eating from his wealth becomes charity.
