Is it from the Sunnah for a person entering a gathering to greet and shake hands, or is it sufficient to just greet?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Regarding this, O Shaykh, if a person enters upon people who are sitting, meaning he greets them, is it recommended or prescribed for him to shake hands with them?

The Shaykh : By Allah, I do not know of a Sunnah established in this matter. As far as I know, the Sunnah is that when a person enters, he greets and sits where the gathering ends.

The questioner : Meaning, he does not shake hands.

The Shaykh : He does not shake hands. And I have researched this with many people, and they said, "We do not know of a Sunnah in this." I asked some of the young men to research it and look into whether this was reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or not, but they found nothing. And I am telling you now: whoever finds something, let him share it with us, because until now we believe that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he entered, would sit where the gathering ended. I do not know of a correct letter or opinion that he would pass by the sitters and shake hands with them.

The questioner : The Shaykh ...

The Shaykh : What about this in the context of meeting, when two Muslims meet?

The questioner : It does not apply.

The Shaykh : It does not apply to this meeting. They were reported to have come to them, but they did not meet them.

The questioner : Handshaking.

The Shaykh : He does not shake hands or do anything else. He says, "Peace be upon you." If there is a place, he sits in it. If there is no place, he sits where the gathering ends. Yes.
