The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-01b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: And Hārūn ibn Sa‘īd al-A‘lī and Harimah ibn Yahyā narrated to me. Harimah said: He informed us. And Hārūn said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us. He informed me. Yūnus from Ibn Shihāb. He informed me. ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh that ‘Ā’ishah and ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Abbās said:
When death overtook the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he began to throw a shawl of his over his face. Whenever he was distressed, he would remove it from his face. And in that state, he said: “May the curse of Allah be upon the Jews and the Christians. They took the graves of their prophets as mosques. He feared what they did.”
.

The Shaykh : In my copy, it says: When it overtook the Messenger of Allah.
The students: And in our copy, it is the same.
The reader: It says in most of the manuscripts: *nuzilat* with the three letters open (fathah), and with a silent feminine *tā’*.

The Shaykh : Yes, it means that death overtook him. This hadith is evidence of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) concern for blocking the doors that lead to shirk (associating partners with Allah). Because if a mosque is built over a grave, how close it is that people will prostrate to the grave instead of to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is part of blocking the paths to shirk, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) blocked every path that leads to shirk.
