Exegesis of Verses (46 - 61) of Surat al-Rahman.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the Pious, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the one hundred and ninetieth meeting of the meetings known as the Open Door, which take place every Thursday of every week, and this Thursday is the thirtieth of the month of Rajab, 1419 AH.
We begin this meeting, as is customary, by speaking about some of the verses of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). We have reached the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens - ولمن خاف مقام ربه جنتان
[Ar-Rahman 55:46]
meaning: that whoever fears the standing before Allah in the presence of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, then for him are two Gardens. This fear necessitates two things:
The first thing: belief in meeting Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because a person does not fear anything unless he is certain of it.
And the second: that he should avoid the prohibitions of Allah and fulfill what Allah has made obligatory out of fear of the punishment of Allah the Exalted. Therefore, it is obligatory for every person to believe in meeting Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by His saying the Exalted:
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. يا أيّها الإنسان إنّك كادح إلى ربّك كدحًا فملاقيه
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:6]
, and He said the Exalted:
And fear Allah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers. واتّقوا الله واعلموا أنّكم ملاقوه وبشّر المؤمنين
[Al-Baqarah 2:223]
, so whoever fears this standing in the presence of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), for him are two Gardens.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? فبأي آلاء ربّكما تكذّبان
[Ar-Rahman 55:13]
We have previously spoken about this.
Having branches ذواتا أفنان
meaning: possessing two sets of branches, and afnan is the plural of fanan, which is a branch, meaning: that they encompass great trees with many branches, and all these branches delight the beholders, and in them are pairs of every fruit.
He said:
In both of them are two springs, flowing. فيهما عينان تجريان
[Ar-Rahman 55:50]
In them, meaning: in the two Gardens, are two flowing springs. And Allah the Exalted mentioned that in Paradise there are rivers of four types, so He said (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey
[Muhammad 47:15]
, and the two flowing springs appear, and Allah knows best, to be other than these four rivers.
And His saying:
In both of them are of every fruit, two kinds. فيهما من كلّ فاكهة زوجان
[Ar-Rahman 55:52]
meaning: in these two Gardens is every fruit, and fruit is: everything by which a person takes pleasure in taste, sight, and smell, so it includes the types of fruit existing in this world, and perhaps there are other fruits that have no counterpart in this world.
(53) So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? (54) [They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low. فبأي آلاء ربّكما تكذّبان * متّكئين على فرش بطائنها من إستبرق
[Ar-Rahman 55:53-54]
meaning: they enjoy this fruit while they are reclining, and thus the word "reclining" is a circumstantial phrase from the actor of the deleted verb, meaning: they enjoy or take pleasure in fruit while reclining. It was said that reclining is sitting cross-legged, because a person is most at ease when he is sitting cross-legged.
And it was said: reclining means leaning on cushions from the right, the left, and behind the back.
on couches على فرش
meaning: sitting on carpets.
whose linings are of silk brocade بطائنها من استبرق
[Ar-Rahman 55:54]
meaning: the lining of the carpet, which is what the carpet is lined with of istabraq, which is thick brocade.
And as for the top of these carpets, it is of sandal, which is fine brocade, and all of it is of silk.
and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low. وجنى الجنّتين دان
[Ar-Rahman 55:54]
Contemplate or imagine this state: a person reclining, at ease, resting, wanting to take pleasure from these fruits. Does he rise from his place where he is settled and reclining to take the fruit?
No, Allah made that clear by His saying:
and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low. وجنى الجنّتين دان
[Ar-Rahman 55:54]
The scholars said: that whenever he looks at a fruit and desires it, the branch bends until the fruit is before him, he does not need to exert himself or rise, but he is reclining, looking at the fruit desiring it, so it descends for him by the command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), even though it is inanimate, but Allah the Exalted gave it a sense so that it descends to him when he desires it. Do not be surprised now, most trees generally face the sun. Look at the faces of the leaves at the beginning of the day, you will find them facing the east, at the end of the day they face the west, they have a sense. Likewise,
the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low. جنى الجنّتين دان
[Ar-Rahman 55:54]
is close, it senses when a man or woman looks at it, so it descends until it is before him.
(55) So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? (56) In them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni - فبأي آلاء ربّكما تكذبان * فيهنّ قاصرات الطّرف
[Ar-Rahman 55:55-56]
:
In them: most people say that the pronoun refers to the two Gardens, and the plural is considered because each person has a specific Garden for him, so "in them" means: in the Garden of each one of those who are in these two Gardens, are those with downcast eyes. And I hold that His saying:
in them فيهنّ
includes the four Gardens, these two Gardens, and the two Gardens after them.
cast down their gazes قاصرات الطرف
: meaning that they lower their gaze, meaning: their look, upon their husbands, so they do not desire anyone else. This is one aspect. Another aspect: those with downcast eyes means that they lower the gaze of their husbands upon them, so they do not desire anyone else. And according to the first opinion, "downcast" is added to the actor, and according to the second, it is added to the object, meaning that their gaze is limited to the husbands, or that she limits his gaze to her.
No man or jinn has touched them before them لم يطمثهن قبلهم ولا جآن
No man has touched them, meaning: no one has had intercourse with them. And it was said that tamth is intercourse with a virgin, and the meaning is that they are virgins, no one has had intercourse with them before, neither human nor jinn. And in this is clear evidence that the believers from the jinn enter Paradise.
As if they were rubies and coral. كأنّهنّ الياقوت والمرجان
[Ar-Rahman 55:58]

The sapphire in clarity, and the coral in redness, meaning that they are dyed with redness with complete clarity.
Then He said (Mighty and Majestic):
Is the reward for good [anything] but good? هل جزآء الإحسان إلاّ الإحسان
[Ar-Rahman 55:60]
meaning: what is the reward for excellence but excellence. The first excellence is the deed, and the second excellence is the reward, meaning: what is the reward for the excellence of the deed but the excellence of the reward.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? فبأيّ آلاء ربّكما تكذّبان
[Ar-Rahman 55:13]
And we will speak, if Allah wills, about the other two Gardens. We begin with the questions.
