A questioner from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah says: I work in a commercial shop, and sometimes I find some pests like locusts and rats. I tried to kill them but could not because of the difficulty.

The questioner : I work in a commercial shop, and sometimes I find some pests, such as rats, mice, or others. I tried to eliminate them by killing them directly, but I could not because of the difficulty. I bought a sticky adhesive substance to catch them, but that caused damage to the merchandise. I came up with a trap in the shape of a perforated box into which those insects and animals enter, and it snaps shut on them while they are alive. Then I kill them with a rod or a sharp tool, knowing that this causes them some torment during the killing. If I do not kill them, I throw them into a vessel containing water, from which they cannot escape, and they remain there until they die. Is there any blame on me for that?

The Shaykh : First: The questioner says that he is from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. This is a common phrase among people, calling the city al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. In truth, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in the city, everything in it was illuminated. But when he passed away, everything in it became dark. This is how the hadith came from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). It is undoubtedly a city illuminated with knowledge and faith, as is every city into which Islam has entered; it is illuminated with knowledge and faith. What it should be called is al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah, as our predecessors the historians called it, namely al-Madinah al-Nabawiyyah. This characteristic, I mean its being Nabawiyyah (Prophetic), is specific to the city because it is the land to which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated, which he chose as his abode, and in which he died. So describing the city as al-Nabawiyyah is more appropriate than describing it as al-Munawwarah.
As for what concerns his question about these insects and rats, he may kill them by the easiest means, whether that is with the adhesive, but if it is with the adhesive, he must observe them and repeat his observation so that they do not die of hunger or thirst; he should kill them as soon as he sees them. Or it may be by what he mentioned, placing a trap into which they enter, and then he kills them. Or it may be by throwing them into water until they die. But he must take the easiest path by which death is achieved, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Allah has decreed proficiency in all things, so when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well إن الله كتب الإحسان على كل شيء فإذا قتلتم فأحسنوا القتل وإذا ذبحتم فأحسنوا الذبحة
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4412Sahih (Darussalam)
.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
