The questioner : It is also said that it is well known that growing the beard for men is a confirmed recommended practice, but if a man’s wife says, “You must shave your beard, or I will not allow you to have access to me,” I ask that you speak about this matter in detail, knowing that I am one of those who is in this situation with my wife, in that I tried to convince her but she did not accept, and she even says that she is ready to divorce you. This is with my thanks and appreciation?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a man to accommodate anyone by obeying them in disobedience to Allah. He must not obey his wife, his mother, his father, or anyone who has authority over him in disobedience to Allah, ever, because there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator. Shaving the beard is forbidden, contrary to the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the guidance of the prophets before him, and the guidance of the Muslims in general. It has been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said
Differ from the Zoroastrians, let the beards grow, and trim the mustaches. خالفوا المجوس وفروا اللحى وحفوا الشوارب
and it has been established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a thick beard. And Harun said to his brother Musa:
O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head يا ابن أم لا تأخذ بلحيتي ولا برأسي
[Taha 20:94]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that letting the beard grow is part of the fitrah (the innate natural disposition) upon which people were created. Therefore, it is forbidden for a man to shave his beard, even if people have become accustomed to it, even if his wife demands it of him, and even if she threatens to divorce him. If she divorces him, the Sharia court that judges by the law of Allah will not enable her to do any action that contradicts the marital relationship because of this adherence to the law of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for this woman or wife, I advise her to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in her husband and not to order him to disobey Allah (Mighty and Majestic). If she orders him to disobey Allah, she is sinful, even if he does not commit the sin, because she loves for him to do it, and it is not permissible for him to agree with her in that.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
