The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this noble verse is also the affirmation of mercy and forgiveness for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as He said: [Saba 34:2] Here, “the Most Merciful” is placed before “the Most Forgiving,” even though the more common order in the Qur'an is to place “the Most Forgiving” before “the Most Merciful.” This is because the benefits and advantages in the heavens and the earth are the effects of what? Mercy. And the removal of calamities is the effect of forgiveness, because forgiveness is the erasure of the sin in which the disliked things revolve, while mercy is the attainment of good. Yes, very well. Mercy, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, is an attribute of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that is real and established for Him. The Asha'irah say that mercy is doing good or the will to do good, so they interpret it as the thing done for Allah, meaning the blessings or the will to bestow blessings. Why? Because they affirm the attribute of what? The attribute of will. So they interpret mercy as the will to bestow blessings and do good, or as the bestowal of blessings and doing good itself. But it has been established for us that the correct, definitive position is that the texts of the Book and the Sunnah regarding the names and attributes of Allah are to be taken at their apparent meaning. Do we need to say “what is befitting”? No, there is no need. We do not say “what is befitting Allah” except by way of clarification only, because we know with certainty that their apparent meaning is befitting for Allah, and their apparent meaning is not, as the people of denial of the divine attributes say, likening Allah to creation. If the apparent meaning of the texts of the Book and the Sunnah regarding the names and attributes of Allah were likening or comparing, then the apparent meaning of the Book and the Sunnah in this matter would be disbelief, because whoever likens Allah to creation has committed disbelief, where he has lied to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Ash-Shuraa 42:11] It is impossible for the apparent meaning of the truth to be what? Falsehood and disbelief. Therefore, if we say that the texts of the Book and the Sunnah regarding the names and attributes of Allah are to be taken at their apparent meaning that is befitting for Allah, this is a matter of what? It is a matter of clarification. Otherwise, we know with certainty, which is for us more certain than the sun, that their apparent meaning is what is befitting for Allah, so there is no need to qualify it with that. But we may qualify it by way of clarification only. Yes.
Is mercy an attribute of perfection in itself, regardless of the one it describes, or is it an attribute of deficiency? It is an attribute of perfection in reality, even mercy.
And He is the Merciful, the Forgiving.
وَهُوَ الرَّحِيمُ الْغَفُورُThere is nothing like unto Him
